Chapter 11 takeaway

Teaching tip

Never underestimate the power of strong and positive community relationships in forming an excellent reputation for your school. You must also remember that they must be worked on and certainly don’t just happen by accident. Different groups of people require different approaches, but all of the groups that play a part in your local community will have a significant voice. The key to building successful and long-lasting positive relationships relies on face-to-face communication and getting out from behind your desk as a school leader and into the community.

Pass it on

When starting at a new school, ask somebody to take you into the community. Setting up some organised visits in the early days of your new role can be very beneficial. You can start to get a flavour for the diversity of the community you are now working in, together with letting the community see you in action and get to know you a little better.
